  2. I would argue the first comma is unnecessary, as the second two that offset the subsequent parenthetical element 'or the Bubonic Plague' offer enough break in the sentence to ease any confusion. Stylistic argument, me thinks, as some grammarians agree that introductory elements like "Coming out of the East' need no comma as long as it doesn't cause confusion.
